A series of collograph prints inspired by bringing together the Moroccan hand or Khamsa and Elizabethan embroidered slips. Mounted in limed ash frames. Elizabethan Hand, a series of collograph prints inspired by bringing together the Moroccan hand or Khamsa and Elizabethan Embroidered Slip The hand, an important symbol in most cultures and dates back to prehistoric cave paintings. In Morocco, motifs of the hand are used as a symbol of human creative activity, power and dominance, with magical properties that can protect the individual. A Traditional Slip, was the name given to a detached motif, whose outline was marked out in ink, prior to to being embroidered with silk. |
The Machine Embroidered Slips in this series of prints are worked onto soluble film. I use free machine embroidery techniques with synthetic threads to produce the slips on the film. It is then placed into warm water and dissolved to leave the embroidered slips without a 'ground' or backing. The slips are then stitched onto the paper.
Embroidery in the realm of Elizabeth 1st 'burst into flower', designs for the collograph are taken from 'A Schole-house for the Needle' by Richard Shorleyker who tells the reader 'Gentle readers I would haue you knowe, which you fhall find in this Schole-house for the Needle, are only but patterns, which ferue but to helpe and inlarge your inventions ................. as will be able to giue content, both to the workers and wearers of them.
Collograph is an experimental form of printmaking which involves adding layers of a variety of adhesives or solid material to the surface of a printmaking plate, making it possible to incorporate both relief and intaglio printmaking methods on a single plate.
